Tony Saunders





At age eighteen he began playing with his father and Jerry Garcia, and was a featured musician in Merl Saunders & the Rain forest Band, and other projects of his father's. Legendary bassist Chuck Rainey, Jack Cassidy and John Kahn all took interest in Saunders’s ability. John Kahn turned Saunders on to James Jamerson, and Saunders modeled his playing around all of his teachers. Other influences include Stanley Clarke, Alphonso Johnson, Rufus Reid, Ralphe Armstrong, and current favorite Marcus Miller. This has led to a very flexible and diverse style.

Saunders has scored movies, corporate videos, TV shows and commercials, and produced many Cd's, primarily out of his own studio, Magic Castle. He wrote the music to the stage play Zetta, performed in San Francisco by the American Conservatory Theatre, and also assumed the role of musical director for the show. He was the musical director of Rock Justice, written by Bob Heyman and Marty Balin of Jefferson Starship. Artists collaborating with him on recent projects have included Mavis Staples, John Lee Hooker and Austin "Auggie" Brown, the nephew of Michael Jackson; Auggie's project was sold to Midas Records.

Farnell Newton




Farnell Newton released his first album, ”Sense of Direction,” co-led by pianist Marcus Reynolds on Diatic Records. Graduate Music Performance at Portland State University (P.S.U.) under the direction of Charles Gray and Darrell Grant, and in 2009, he finished his Master’s Degree of Music in Jazz Studies and was hired at P.S.U. as Professor of Jazz Trumpet.
 
Farnell Newton, recently performed as trumpeter for the Soul Train Awards house band, which played with notable artists, such as Erykad Badu, Ledisi, Chaka Khan, Fantasia, Charlie Wilson, Bootsy Collins, Ginuwine, Brian McKnight, Johnny Gill, Raheem Devaughn, Chrisette Michelle, Boyz II Men, Melanie Fiona, and Ryan Leslie.  In conjunction with his work as a performer and producer, Farnell is also developing and maintaining a multicultural, jazz education program in metropolitan Portland.  Farnell's new cd "Class Is Now In Session" now available on amazon.com

As a background artist Robert has worked with some of the music industry royalty such as Luther Vandross, Atlantic Starr, Teena Marie, Vesta, Bee Bee Winans and the legendary Emotions!

Ray Piper

Ray has travelled to Brazil many times, concentrating on exploring different areas of the country and their unique musical styles. Ray record the CD “Ray Piper Sabor Do Rio” which was a culmination of the previous trip and was recorded in Rio and completed in Vancouver. He wrote additional material for the CD which was recorded with Ronaldo do Bandolim, Marcilio Lopes, Rogerio Souza, Eduardo Neves, Jorge Helder, Erivelton Silva, Jorginho Silva, Durval Pereira , Kiko Horta, Jaimie Vignoli, Tom Keenlyside, Michael Creber, Joao Hermeto and Fernanda Cunha who wrote the lyrics to the Bossa Novas. The tunes he composed reflect a jazz player's love of the music and people of Brazil.

Kool and The Gang



Still Kool after all these years!  With their cd "Still Kool" now available on their website as well as most digital online stores. The main members included brothers Robert Bell (known as "Kool") on bass and Ronald Bell on tenor saxophone, lead vocalist James "J.T." Taylor, George Brown on drums, Robert Mickens on trumpet, Dennis Thomas on alto saxophone, Claydes Charles Smith on guitar, and Rick Westfield on keyboards. The Bell brothers' father was an acquaintance of  Thelonious Monk, and the brothers were friends with Leon Thomas.
